Mount Unzen (Unzendake), from the. Series “The New Eight Views of Japan”. Signed “Hasui” with red artist’s seal “Kawase”. Traditional Japanese woodblock print (ink and color on washi paper). 27 × 19.5 cm (10.63 × 7.68 inches). Condition: Minor age-related foxing, overall in good condition. Excellent with beautiful color and fine detail. Mount Unzen, one of Japan’s most famous volcanic landscapes, is depicted in the gentle light of early morning. Layers of mist drift across the mountains as the warm glow of dawn softly illuminates the slopes, creating a scene filled with quiet atmosphere rather than dramatic grandeur. Through delicate bokashi gradations and beautifully balanced colors, Hasui masterfully conveys the cool, moisture-laden air unique to this volcanic region. This fine early Showa impression is admired for its rich pigments, subtle printing, and exceptional craftsmanship, beautifully expressing the poetic serenity that defines Hasui’s finest landscape prints. This print is a later edition of the New Eight Views of Japan, published by the Ukiyo-e Print Publishing Association. It preserves the refined composition and superb craftsmanship of the original designs while reflecting the excellent printing quality characteristic of the early Showa period. He went on to become the foremost master of the Shin-hanga movement, producing more than 600 landscape prints over a career spanning nearly four decades. Hasui’s works are celebrated for their poetic atmosphere, masterful use of light and shadow, and subtle bokashi gradations. His distinctive blue tones-often referred to by collectors as “Hasui Blue”-beautifully convey the mood of water, sky, mist, and evening light. Fine impressions from the early Showa period are especially admired for their rich colors, delicate gradations, and exceptional printing quality that perfectly express Hasui’s artistic vision. We sell only authentic traditional Japanese hand-printed woodblock prints, including later re-carved or later edition works. We do not handle modern machine-made prints, offset prints, or modern printed copies of any kind. All prints in our store are genuine te-zuri (hand-printed) woodblock prints, carefully hand-printed by skilled Japanese artisans using traditional Ukiyo-e techniques on authentic Japanese washi paper. The visible pigment bleed-through on the reverse side is a natural characteristic of hand printing and a clear sign that this is not a reproduction or machine-made print.
