Onda was a Japanese sosaku-hanga artist and former assistant to renowned woodblock master Shiko Munakata. The print illustrates a haiku by Matsuo Basho, “?????????? , ” depicting a child with flowers. Bold black-and-white design printed on textured Japanese washi paper. That is particularly important because this piece is not simply a decorative modern Japanese print. It fits directly into Onda’s recognized body of haiku-inspired sosaku-hanga work. What the writing actually says. The large inscription reads. This is a haiku by Matsuo Basho, roughly. Wearing it in his hair. The image illustrates exactly that: a child holding/wearing hibiscus/rose-of-Sharon blossoms. The lower inscription includes (Basho), followed by the red seal, and , while at right is the artist’s handwritten Roman signature Onda Akyio. Print/visible sheet: 12¼ x 9 in. Overall backing/mount: 15 x 11¾ in. (38 x 30 cm). Vintage condition with age toning, wrinkles/creases and some marks consistent with age. Mounted to an older backing with paper covering and tape visible on reverse. Has not been removed from the mount. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition.
