Genuine antique Japanese woodblock print, Station #4: Kanagawa, from the celebrated “Sohitsu Gojusan Tsugi” (Twin Brushes Fifty-Three Stations) series, circa 1836 – pairing Utagawa Kunisada’s (Toyokuni III) elegant figures with Hiroshige I’s Tokaido landscape insets. The complete series is held by major institutions including the Honolulu Museum of Art. This vibrant example features a beautifully dressed woman in an olive kimono with a striking checkered blue-and-orange obi, walking a coastal bluff road above Kanagawa Bay, with Hiroshige’s background depicting stepped teahouse rooftops, sailboats, and children at play. Title cartouche reads Kanagawa no Zu. Signed and sealed by Kunisada. Excellent color remains vivid throughout with only minor scattered age spotting – the best-preserved of this station series. Comes matted at approximately 15″ x 20″ overall with a detailed prior collector’s provenance note on the backing board. A vibrant, well-preserved piece of 19th-century ukiyo-e collaboration.
