Katsukawa Shunsho Japanese Woodblock Print 1775 Mother and Children
Printing method: Woodblock print. School of Japanese Art. Circa 1800, perhaps earlier (we are not experts). Paper laid onto stiff card (old). Mother outside with a young child at her feet wiggling fingers and making a silly face at the baby she holds in her arms. Very playful and appealing scene. Also shows fencing, pond, tree trunk, and distant mountains. At top is a composition in Japanese, likely a poem. Very good antique condition without notable damage. Normal fading of colors, normal age spots to corners, minor occasional toning. None of this detracts from the charming image. A scarce and wondrous piece. Please see scans for details as they are part of the description. Loup Garou Books & Antiques.

4 Kono Bairei WoodblocksSigned w Seal (hanko)Framed & Matted (3)1880-90’s
This beautiful set of four Kona Bairei woodblocks featuring Crysanthemums, insects and birds, showcases the artist’s attention to detail and use of vibrant colors. Three of the prints are framed and matted, adding a touch of sophistication to any room. The fourth has its matting, however the frame itself was damaged and removed. The artist’s signature and seal can be found on each woodblock, adding to their authenticity. Each print is approximately 12.5 x 16 inches (framed). In his youth, he studied Maruyama-style painting under Nakajima Raisho, before shifting to the Shijo-school and the tutelage of Shiokawa Bunrin in his twenties. He also studied with several Nanga-school artists throughout his early career. Bairei was a well-known figure in the Kyoto art scene and played a critical role in the founding of the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting. In 1881, he opened his own studio and began to take on students. Bairei is best recognized for his illustrated books and kacho-e, or bird-and-flower prints. In 1883, he released his most popular work, Bairei kacho gafu (Bairei’s Album of Flowers and Birds). This album considers pairs of birds and flowers throughout the four seasons. Like many of his fellow Meiji-period artists, Bairei incorporates some aspects of Western art in his work, yet retains a fidelity to the spirit of the woodblock print medium. In 1893, Bairei’s critical and commercial success was honored with his appointment to the Art Committee of the Imperial Household.
